BabyName is an app for couples choosing a baby name together. Here's what data the app has about you and what it does with it. In plain language.

1. What the app stores on your phone
The app stores locally on your device:
- your settings (theme, language, layout),
- the name you entered in your profile,
- your name selections (selection title, child's surname, gender, chosen countries),
- your name ratings (like, favorite),
- how many names you've gone through,
- your code for pairing with a partner.
Most of this data stays only on your phone — exactly what gets sent to the server, and when, is described in the next section. Delete everything in Settings → Delete all data.
2. What gets sent to the internet
On first launch the app signs in anonymously to the server (Google Firebase) and stores an "invitation" there, ready for future pairing. It contains:
- your device's anonymous identifier — no name, email, or phone number,
- your eight-character session code,
- the name you entered in your profile (so your partner can see it after joining).
This is what lets a partner join you the moment you give them the code. If you never pair with anyone, nothing more is sent.
When you pair with a partner, exactly one thing is added: how you rated individual names and when — so the app can detect a match.
The child's surname is never sent to the server — it stays on your phone.
There's one exception: if you explicitly use the Share selection button, the selection title, gender, surname, list of names, and any filter criteria are also sent to the cloud so your partner can import them. Once they accept (or decline), the shared data is deleted from the cloud.
Crash reporting: when the app crashes or hits an error, a technical report is sent to the Sentry service (servers in the EU): device model, OS and app version, and a technical description of the error. Reports deliberately contain no profile names, surnames, session codes, or name ratings — we strip those before anything is sent. Reports are used solely to fix bugs.
Premium purchase (optional): payment is processed exclusively by Apple — we never see your card details. To manage the purchase (verification, restoring on a new device, refunds) we use RevenueCat, which processes an anonymous purchase identifier and transaction details. No names, emails or app content are sent there. In Settings you'll find a "Support ID" — an anonymous code you can send us if you need help with your purchase. If you're paired, an anonymous note that one of you owns Premium is stored with your session so your partner can use it too.
New match notifications (optional): if you turn on "New match alerts" in Settings, your device's technical push token and the app language are stored on the server. They are used only to alert you when you and your partner pick the same name. The notification text includes the first name you matched on and your partner's profile name — these are visible on your lock screen; the child's surname is never included. Notifications are delivered via the Expo Push service (which forwards them to Apple or Google). You can delete the token anytime by turning the switch off or via "Delete all data". No token is stored unless you enable this feature.
3. What the app does NOT do
- doesn't show ads,
- doesn't measure your behavior (no analytics, no ad tracking — the only thing reported is app crashes, see above),
- doesn't follow you across other apps,
- doesn't require sign-up, email, or password,
- doesn't use cookies (it's a mobile app, not a website).
4. Sharing and clipboard
On your request, the app can copy the session code to the clipboard or open the system "Share" sheet (for example, to send a name by SMS). When you do that, you hand the data over to the operating system or another app — what happens next is up to it, not BabyName.
Never share your session code publicly. Anyone who knows it can join your pairing session.
5. Children
The app is intended for adults choosing a name for a child. We don't collect anything about the child itself (date of birth, photos, medical data).
6. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access your data,
- correct it,
- erase it,
- restrict its processing,
- data portability.
The fastest way to erase your data is right inside the app: Settings → Delete all data. This immediately removes you from the pairing session and erases your ratings, profile name, and any push token from the cloud as well. For email requests, write to support.milos.hynek@gmail.com.
7. How long we keep data
- Data on your phone stays until you delete it yourself or uninstall the app.
- Data in the cloud stays until you use "Unpair partner" or "Delete all data" in Settings — this erases your ratings and your profile name.
- Technical match records (first name + anonymous identifiers, no profile names) remain in the session so you don't get re-notified about old matches after re-pairing. They disappear together with the session.
- Abandoned sessions (with no participants left) are automatically deleted by the server within 7 days — including any remaining technical records.
8. Security
- Communication between the app and the server is encrypted.
- Only you and your partner can access your pairing session in the cloud.
- The server only accepts requests from a genuine, unmodified copy of the app — verified via Apple App Attest / DeviceCheck (on iOS) and Google Play Integrity (on Android). This is a technical device check; no personal data is shared through it.
- No sign-up, no password — nothing to lose or leak.
9. Changes to this policy
We'll notify you of material changes the next time you open the app. The current version is always at this address.
